In just five short months from the original idea, the Ponchatoula Wellness Plaza will open in Kiwanis Park, Friday, December 11, with a ribbon cutting at 1:00 followed by a two hour Health Fair, all free and open to the public.

The Wellness Plaza is an outdoor, state-of-the-art fitness area specializing in older adult health. The centerpiece of the Wellness Plaza is a Jungle Gym which includes 18 exercises to help adults improve their balance and build confidence, which in turn will prevent falls and hospital stays. The Plaza also includes temperature-neutral benches as well as a gazebo to give Ponchatoula’s 50+ citizens the chance to visit and meet new people. The facility will also be lighted for nighttime use.

Mayor Bob Zabbia has secured over $64,000 in private donations, almost all of which have come from local businesses who have partnered with a city committed to making the Wellness Plaza a reality: First Guaranty Bank, Elmer Candy Co., North Oaks, Pon Food, Whitney Bank, Florida Parishes Bank, Middendorf’s, Walmart, Ponchatoula Therapy, Cypress Pointe, Bohnings Supermarket, Acadian Cypress, MediThrift Pharmacy, Premier Hearing & Balance, First Baptist Church, Seven Oaks Signs, Johnny Chauvin Photography and J & M Industries.

Organizations have jumped on board like the Ponchatoula Kiwanis Club, Lions Club and Rotary Club as well as countless individuals who have just written checks to say, “Hey, we want to make this happen in Ponchatoula!”

During Friday’s Health Fair, Ponchatoula Therapy will be on hand to assist in the use of the various exercises, North Oaks Rehab will provide balance screening, and about a dozen other Partners will distribute valuable information about health and fitness.
